in response to HIV-1 in women than in men, which leads to higher

PROTEIN BURNS ITS EVOLUTIONARY BRIDGES

The glucocorticoid receptor (GR) evolved more than 400 million years
ago from an ancestral receptor that was activated by a trio of
hormones (cortisol, aldosterone and deoxycorticosterone).
Researchers have now shown that mutations that impart selectivity to
cortisol cannot be reverted; suggesting that changes in protein
function or structure happening over the course of tens of millions
of years can prevent molecular turnarounds and render evolution
irreversible.
