STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY: DEATH CLUSTERS

The structure of the Fas-FADD death domain complex reveals how it
switches on apoptosis solely through oligomerization and clustering.

Receptor interacting protein 140 (RIP140) is a transcriptional
co-regulator of many nuclear receptors and several transcription
factors. Studies of RIP140 knockout animals and various cell-culture
models demonstrate the function of RIP140 in a wide variety of
biological processes, such as metabolism, cell proliferation and
carcinogenesis. RIP140 represses target gene expression in most
experimental systems examined; it acts in a ligand-dependent manner
for nuclear receptors and, therefore, belongs to the ligand-dependent
co-repressor category.

MECHANISMS OF DISEASE: HOW STRESS AFFECTS FAT
Cellular stress induced by a high-fat diet activates JNK1 in
adipocytes, which contributes to the development of hepatic insulin
resistance by increasing interleukin 6 expression.

ONCOGENE REPRESSION: CDYL AND REST - A SILENT TEAM
A trimeric CDYL-G9a-REST complex suppresses expression of the
neurotrophic tyrosine kinase receptor type 3 (NTRK3, also known as
TRKC) and prevents cellular transformation.

MICROSCOPY: IMAGING GOES LABEL-FREE
A new technology based on stimulated Raman scattering allows
three-dimensional imaging of specific, unlabelled molecular species
and could be particularly useful for visualizing lipids and small
molecules such as drugs.
