There are often two sides to a story in scientific research, yet the
forum for debate can be limited. Outsiders who have developed their
own ideas or methods may have trouble publishing in journals that set
the tone for the field. EMBO reports hopes to open up debates in
difficult fields of research and on topics of social relevance with
its Talking Point articles. Find out more at

Clustering of VASP actively drives processive, WH2 domain-mediated
actin filament elongation
Ena/VASP proteins are key regulators of actin dynamics, yet
conflicting models on their mode of action have been put forward in
the literature. The Faix lab now reports the first evidence that VASP
delivers actin monomers to the growing barbed end, and thus possesses
processive filament elongation activity.

Low reduction potential of Ero1[alpha] regulatory disulphides ensures
tight control of substrate oxidation
Ero1 family members play an essential role in disulphide bond
formation in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), but little is know about
the regulation of Ero1 activity in mammalian cells. Two studies from
the Ellgaard and Bulleid labs provide new insight into the regulation
of human Ero1[alpha], revealing a novel regulatory feedback loop in ER
redox control.
