== IN THE SKY THIS WEEK ==
The new Moon is Wednesday 29 October. Venus is easily seen high in the early evening sky in the head of the constellation of the scorpion. It will then move through the scorpion, and on Monday 27 October and Tuesday 28 October Venus will be very close to the bright red star Antares. Jupiter is high in the western evening sky above the constellation of the scorpion. The sight of these two bright planets moving closer together through one of the more spectacular regions of the sky will be very interesting to watch. Saturn can be seen low in the north-eastern morning sky just before dawn. On the morning of Saturday 25 October and Sunday 26 October the thin crescent Moon will be close to Saturn. Mercury is low in the dawn sky, but will be very difficult to see even with a flat, clear eastern horizon.

THE SCIENCE SHOW - Cannabis for stroke victims?
Saturday 25 October, 12.05pm & Monday 27 October, 7.05pm RN
The brain's reaction to a bang on the head or a stroke is similar - and pretty hopeless. Back in nature there wasn't much the body could do to repair such catastrophe and after a stroke inflammation is the last thing you need. But now a team in Dunedin are finding that some drugs are picked up more after stroke and subdue harmful inflammations. Professor John Ashton and his team describe the progress and how you isolate one or two of the many chemicals in cannabis to find a treatment.

OCKHAM'S RAZOR - Under the hammer
Sunday 26 October, 8.45am RN
Who would have thought just a few years ago that one day we'd be able to peer down like God into everyone's backyard through our computer screens? Or that almost anywhere there'd be a camera watching us, recording what we do. Today Melbourne author Andrew Herrick delves into the not too far distant future to tell us what can happen and warns that it's not all science fiction.

THE HEALTH REPORT - Latent autoimmune diabetes of adulthood (LADA)
Monday 27 October, 8.30am & 8.05pm RN

IN CONVERSATION - The Nigella Lawson of physics?
Thursday 30 October, 7.35pm RN
Dr Laura Grant is a beguiling presence on British television. She both looks like a film star and knows her physical sciences - hence the Nigella Lawson line that accompanied her write up in The Sunday Times of London. Her unique skill, however, has been to persuade a bunch of "no way!" teenagers to take science seriously, even to enjoy it. She did this in a series on Discovery Channel, and the results were fascinating.

GALAPAGOS - FORCES OF CHANGE
ABC1, 7:30pm Sunday, 26 October 2008
The geological forces at work in Galápagos are complex and unpredictable; so too are the many ocean currents that unite there. The ever-changing islands, with eruptions occurring every few years, make it hard to find a foothold. But mangroves are inventive pioneers, their salt-tolerant seeds settling on unforgiving lava terrain to create dense labyrinths of vegetation which are crucial nurseries for fish, offering precious shade from the equatorial sun. Even on the most exposed shorelines, fur seals find daytime shelter in lava grottos, formed by volcanic lava flows.

HOW KEVIN BACON CURED CANCER
ABC1, 8:30pm Tuesday, 28 October 2008
We've all heard of 'six degrees of separation', the idea that everyone in the world can be connected in just a few steps. But what if those steps don't just relate to people but also to viruses, neurons, proteins and even to fashion trends? What if this 'six degrees of separation' allowed us an insight into something at the core of Nature? We used to think the way in which web pages, power grids and people tied together was more or less random. But recently two young physicists independently discovered that fundamental laws govern networks.
