THE SCIENCE SHOW - Science: flavour of the year?
Saturday 11 October, 12.05pm & Monday 13 October, 7.05pm RN
There is now new evidence that more young people may be choosing science as an educational option. Helen Haste of Harvard goes through the figures and finds distinct signs of a turn around. And at the University of Queensland Professor Phil Long suggests a new way of imparting scientific ideas could be the key to keeping students interested. Most traditional approaches, he says, are both boring and pointless. But what innovations are working?

ALL IN THE MIND - Dementia and antipsychotics: medication or management?
Saturday 11 October, 1.05pm & Monday 13 October, 1.05pm RN
Dementia can trigger behaviours that are deeply depressing to loved ones such as aggression, agitation and even delusions and hallucinations. Antipsychotic medications are commonly prescribed but they are now known to increase the risk of mortality and stroke. There are also concerns their use is excessive in under-resourced aged care settings, so are they a management tool or good medical practice?

Today Sydney science writer Peter Macinnis tells us of the many scientific and technological discoveries of that era. To name a few, the world would be linked by wires, rails, canals and steamer routes and suburban trams and trains would start to appear in major cities across the world.

IN CONVERSATION - Blast off
Thursday 16 October, 7.35pm RN
He's one of the most individualistic rocket scientists to hit the Americans - and one of the most successful. Ken McCracken learned his astronomy in Tasmania over 50 years ago. He learned to be self-reliant both in Australia and Papua New Guinea and then joined NASA in the United States. It was a surprisingly productive relationship. Dr McCracken looks back on a wonderful career in space research and gives advice on how to deal with tricky bureaucrats with Robyn Williams.
