ES to Cardiomyocyte patent issued

View this message online

Hello manoj kumar valluru,

Last week Geron increased its hold on the embryonic stem cell field by issuance of a patent, #7,425,448, teaching the generation of cardiomyocytes from cultures of ES cells.  Another interesting patent was issued, #7,425,545, that claims antisense oligonucleotide sequences for suppression of C Reactive Protein.  This is of interest to the area of stem cells since C reactive protein is one of the inflammatory agents associated with demise of stem cell activity in aging.  Additionally, CRP has been shown to directly kill endothelial progenitor cells (Fuji et al. C-reactive protein alters antioxidant defenses and promotes apoptosis in endothelial progenitor cells. Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2006 Nov;26(11):2476-82).  Thus it will be exciting to see if the techniques in this patent will be used together with stem cell therapy.

An interesting paper was published last week demonstrating that exercise increases neural stem cell number and activity in middle aged mice.  The company Stem Cell Therapeutics has developed a drug candidate pipeline, some of which are in Phase II, on the basis of replicating the stimulation of neural stem cells found in pregnancy by identifying the various hormones responsible for this, such as human chorionic gonadotrophin and prolactin.  If exercise increases neural stem cells through other mechanisms, perhaps similar commercialization of these concepts will also occur.

Geron has taken a very strategic approach to embryonic stem cells.  They inlicensed composition of matter patents on embryonic stem cells, such as #5,843,780 from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), they patented methods of culturing embryonic stem cells in serum free...[Read More]

  Exercise Increases Neural Stem Cells

Monday September 22nd, 2008 @ 09:58:03 EST

Taiwan - Neural stem cells are known to exist in post-natal animals. For example, during pregnancy, an increase in mitotic cells has been reported in the brains of the mother. This has been ascribed to numerous hormones and growth factors, including prolactin and human chorionic gonadotrophin.

Furuta et al. (Gestation-induced cell...[Read More]

More about The Stem Cell Meeting

The Stem Cell Meeting, to be held March 2009, is returning for its 3rd year. This conference will examine the up to date most critical scientific, policy and business issues facing stem cell research, medicine and investment. In collaboration with the leaders of the City of San Francisco and the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, it brings together an international assembly of scientists, clinicians, policymakers and business leaders who share their vision and passion for the life sciences’ most promising field.

This Stem Cell Meeting is the premier international event bringing together world-renowned scientists at the frontier of embryonic and adult stem cell research with decision-makers and thought leaders in policy, ethics, patient advocacy, finance, business, and media to explore the challenge and promise of stem cell research and the compelling potential of emerging therapies.

StemCellPatents.com is proud to be a supporter of the The Stem Cell Meeting.
