CELL CYCLE: COMING TOGETHER TO TEAR CELLS APART

The sequential phosphorylation of PKC[epsilon] is necessary for its
association with 14-3-3 proteins and its localization to the mitotic
cleavage furrow, as well as the subsequent dissolution of the mitotic
ring and the separation of daughter cells during mitosis.

Rab26
http://ealerts.nature.com/cgi-bin24/DM/y/em4v0Xztnp0H2W0B3kc0EA

Despite its identification in rat pancreas 13 years ago, Rab26 remains
an enigmatic member of the Rab small GTPase family. Rab26 is present
in tissues with regulated exocytosis or high secretory activity such
as brain, pancreas, kidney and the parotid gland, suggesting that
Rab26 plays a role in regulated secretion within discrete tissue types.

ANGIOGENESIS: TURNING IT DOWN A NOTCH
Inhibition of Notch1 signaling in vascular endothelial growth factor
(VEGF)-producing tumor cells reduces tumor volume and decreases
angiogenesis.

THERAPEUTICS: UNRAVELLING LETHALITY
Two studies provide insight into how drugs that target topoisomerases
are able to induce apoptosis in cancer cells.

NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS: MAGIC WITH RAPAMYCIN
Mutations in tuberous sclerosis complex 2 (TSC2) causes mental
retardation, seizures and behavioral problems, but treating Tsc2+/-
mice with the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin improves learning and memory.

BOOSTING 'GOOD' FAT TO BURN OFF THE BAD
http://ealerts.nature.com/cgi-bin24/DM/y/em4v0Xztnp0H2W0B3kk0EI

In mammals, white adipose tissue stores fat, whereas brown adipose
tissue burns calories to generate body heat. Researchers have now
shown that brown and white fat cells have distinct origins;
surprisingly, brown fat cells arise from muscle progenitor (myoblast)
cells. The transcriptional regulator PRDM16 mediates the bidirectional
cell fate switch between muscle and brown fat.

Signaling Job of the Week
-----------------------------
Independent Junior Research Group Positions
Employer: University of Frankfurt and the Max-Planck-Institute
Location: Frankfurt am Main, Germany
http://ealerts.nature.com/cgi-bin24/DM/y/em4v0Xztnp0H2W0B3kl0EJ

Group leaders, post-docs and Ph.D. students are sought to form two
independent junior research groups within the newly established Lipid
Signaling Center in Frankfurt. Research is focused on understanding
the role of lipids in cellular signaling processes and defining how
the dysfunction of lipid signaling contributes to the pathophysiology
of various diseases.
