League hosts forum on stem cells
New Jersey-- On July 27, 2007 Gov. Jon Corzine signed into law the 2007 Stem Cell Research Bond Act. Voters will be asked to decide this November whether to authorize the spending of $450 million over 10 years on research grants, as called for in the Act.
"Why are the residents of NJ being asked to assume a debt of $450 to support scientific research about stem cells? Why is stem cell research being given this special treatment? What will New Jersey get as a return on this investment?" asked Helena Axelrod, vice president of the League of Women Voters of the Chatham-Madison Area.
To help voters with these and other questions, the Chatham-Madison Area League of Women voters is sponsoring a public forum at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Borough Hall, 54 Fairmount Ave., in the Council Chambers.
The forum will feature Assemblyman Neil Cohen (D-Union) and Assemblyman Michael Carroll (R-Morris), who will discuss the background and pros and cons of the legislation.
The overview of the scientific research will be described by Dr. Barry Komisaru, a professor at Rutgers University, and Dr. Richard Nowakowski of UMDNJ-R.W. Johnson Medical School.
Dr. Donald Sebastian, Sr. VP-NJ Institute of Technology, will discuss research spending and the economic impact.
The League of Women Voters is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization whose primary purpose is to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government. It also influences public policy through education and advocacy.
