Nup98 is a 98 kDa protein of the nuclear pore complex (NPC), the
large macromolecular structure responsible for trafficking between
the nucleus and the cytoplasm. Nup98 is a key player in RNA export
from the nucleus, has a role in the import of some nuclear proteins,
and contributes to proper mitotic regulation during cell division.

IMMORTALITY IMPROVES CELL REPROGRAMMING

Five research teams report in Nature that silencing the p53 pathway
increases the rate at which differentiated cells can be transformed
into induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. These iPS cells have
traditionally been created by expressing four factors: Oct3/4, Sox2,
Klf4, and c-Myc. However, disabling the p53 pathway also improved
success rates for other generation techniques, including the use of
plasmid vectors or viral vectors with only two or three factors.
