PROSTATE CANCER: A NEW COOPERATIVE LINK EMERGES
Misregulated expression of the transcription factor ERG cooperates
with loss of the PI(3)K pathway inhibitor PTEN to promote prostate
tumorigenesis.

GUANYLATE CYCLASE 2E

The retina-specific, membrane-bound guanylate cyclase 1 catalyzes the
synthesis of the intracellular messenger cyclic GMP in rod and cone
photoreceptor cells. The catalytic transformation of GTP to cyclic
GMP requires a dimeric state of the enzyme. A Ca2+ feedback-triggered
increase in guanylate cyclase activity restores the empty cyclic GMP
pool after illumination.

CYTOSKELETON: JMY: ACTIN UP IN CELL MOTILITY
The p53 cofactor JMY promotes cell motility by combining the
nucleating activities of the actin-related protein 2/3 (Arp2/3)
complex and spire, which create branched actin filaments and
unbranched filaments, respectively.

METABOLISM: LESS IS MORE IS MUTATION DEPENDENT
In mice, mutational activation of the PI3K signaling pathway confers
resistance to the reduction in tumor growth induced by dietary
restriction.

The UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has
postponed and softened its proposal to bar serially unsuccessful
grant applicants from making funding bids for one year.
The restriction has been delayed to 1 April 2010, and barred
researchers will still be able to submit one application during the
year instead of being excluded outright
