Gut Bacteria and GVHD

View this message online

Hello manoj kumar valluru,

Last week we came across a paper demonstrating in a pretty convincing manner that radiation seems to induce a lymphopenia-independent augmentation of T cell responses through induction of bacterial translocation from the gut.  A very interesting immunology piece.  Click here for the Video and discussion.

Three patents of interest were issued last week.  #7,498,171 covers the use of various thalidomide analogues for skewing hematopoietic stem cell differentiation away from the erythroid lineage and more towards the myelocytic lineage.  This patent could be very useful since these compounds are also known to be immune modulatory.  #7,498,342 covers novel compositions of matter capable of manipulating activity of c-kit.  These could be useful not only in targeting tumor stem cells, but also manipulation of other types of tissue specific stem cells that express c-kit.  Finally, #7,498,168 will be the favorite of "regenerative dentists" covering methods of generating tooth progenitor cells from neural or embryonic stem cells.

Patent Number: 7,498,171

One of the areas in which regenerative medicine is heading is the use of "drugs" to modulate the stem cell compartment.  For example, we have previously seen companies like Stem Cell Therapeutics performing clinical trials with EPO and hCG for stroke.  Drugs already in the clinic such...[Read More]

Radiation Induced Bacterial Translocation Causes GVHD

Tuesday March 10th, 2009 @ 02:44:56 EST
[Watch the Video]

When cord blood stem cells are used in the context of treatment of leukemia, graft versus host has been reported to occur in some patients.  Although incidence is reduced in patients who receive hematopoietic stem cells in the form of cord blood as compared to bone marrow, GVHD is still a concern.  An important...[Read More]
