== IN THE SKY THIS WEEK ==
The first quarter Moon is Wednesday March 4. Venus is very low to the horizon, and by the end of the week is almost lost in the glow of twilight. During this time its crescent will become dramatically bigger and thinner, and visible through good quality 10x50 binoculars. On Saturday February 28 the crescent Moon is just above crescent Venus.
Comet Lulin is easily visible in binoculars as a round, fuzzy ball, on a line between Saturn and the bright star Regulus. Lulin is visible to the unaided eye in dark sky locations, and with binoculars in suburban locations. Saturn is now rising as Venus is setting and can be easily seen as the second brightest object above the north-eastern horizon, about a third of the way between the bright stars Regulus and Spica. Now is a very good time to view this ringed world in a telescope. Its rings are edge on, which will not occur again for another 14 years. On the morning of Monday March 2, Mercury and Mars are close together, with Jupiter above them.

THE SCIENCE SHOW - Neanderthals and the broken collider
Saturday 28 February, 12.05pm & Monday 2 March, 7.05pm RN
The great interest in the Neanderthal genome, just revealed, is how close it is to yours and mine. Lactose intolerance, making milk hard to digest, or facility with language, can be checked on our respective barcodes. And these near relatives, with whom we coexisted 300,000 years ago, may have been cannibals! Meanwhile, in Geneva, when will the severely broken Large Hadron Collider, so hugely hyped in September, actually start working again? Its director, Lyn Evans, hazards a guess.

OCKHAM'S RAZOR - A noun in your auricle
Sunday 1 March, 8.45am RN
Dr Rob Morrison from Flinders University discusses how errors of grammar, punctuation and inaccurate scientific terminology can be misleading and complicate important social issues. For example the word 'superbug' often used in the scientific media refers to bacteria but if popular science calls everything a bug it ignores the distinction between bacteria and virus. Bacteria respond to antibiotics, viruses do not, which has led to over-prescription of these medications.

Robotics is forging ahead, and there are benefits. But the costs are huge, and there's no evidence that (in prostate cancer surgery for instance) the eventual outcome is much better than before. We visit the frontier of modern surgery.

ABC2, 6:35pm Tuesday, 3 March 2009
Scrapheap Challenge heads out of the scrap yard and onto the open road with five of Britain's funniest bodging threesomes, veterans of the heap, going head-to-head to build the ultimate all-round vehicle, for a crazy race throughout the UK. In the first race five teams of amateur engineers have just five short weeks and only £1500 to build five awe-inspiring all-terrain roadsters from scratch. Then the Scrappy Racers head out on a gruelling thousand mile journey through the country lanes, leafy suburbs and inner cities of Britain, to face hair-raising challenges at three very special locations. Each week, as the championship unfolds, teams have eight hours on local scrapheaps along the way to adapt their vehicles for the challenges ahead.

Cheese is one of only six food items that don't make her sick and she sees trying new food as a terrifying experience. With her two teenage daughters beginning to follow in Mum's footsteps, Kate is desperate to start setting a better example.
