== IN THE SKY THIS WEEK ==
The first quarter Moon is Tuesday February 3. Venus is easily recognized as the brightest object in the western evening sky and is bright enough to be seen in daylight, but can be hard to find. On Friday January 30 Venus is just two finger-widths above the crescent Moon making it much easier to find. You should wait until the late afternoon, when Venus and the Moon are reasonably high. Make sure the Sun is hidden behind a building or wall or something substantial, so you cannot accidentally damage your eyesight. The moon will be around 44 degrees from the Sun (around 6 handspans i.e. if the Sun is due west the Moon will be northwest). You may need to hunt for it a bit to see the relatively thin crescent against the bright sky. Once you have the Moon, Venus will be readily visible just above it. Later in the evening, the airing of the crescent moon and Venus will be quite beautiful.
Saturn is now rising well before midnight and can be easily seen as the second brightest object above the north-eastern horizon almost midway between the bright stars Regulus and Spica. Saturn's yellow colour distinguishes it from these two stars. In a small telescope Saturn's rings are almost edge on.
In the morning, Mercury and Mars can be seen together in the eastern twilight. During the week Mercury rises higher in the sky and becomes quite obvious, this will be the best time to see Mercury in the morning this year.
