== IN THE SKY THIS SUMMER ==
The new Moon is Australia Day, Monday January 26. There is a partial eclipse that can be seen from Central and Western Australia, with the best views from the Northern Territory. The sun is only partially covered, with the maximum extent being 40 per cent of the Sun's disc covered as seen from Darwin. Remember, NEVER look directly at the Sun, and only use safe solar projection techniques (such as pinholes NEVER use exposed film or smoked glass) to view the eclipse. Venus is easily recognized as the brightest object in the western evening sky. This week is the last time you can see the variable star Algol increase in brightness for many months. Algol will be at its dimmest at 9:30pm on Wednesday January 28, and will brighten over the evening. Saturn is now rising well before midnight and can be easily seen as the second brightest object above the north-eastern horizon almost midway between the bright stars Regulus and Spica.
