| View this message online Hello manoj kumar valluru, A very interesting patent, # 7,452,662, was issued last week covering the use of hyperthermia for expansion of CD34 cells, as well as enhancement of megakaryocytic differentiation from cord blood. Given that therapeutic hyperthermia has been clinically used for a variety of conditions, maybe someone will develop a device for localizing hypertherapy to major bones and thus augment post-myeloablative recovery ! While controversy exists about non-hematopoietic uses of bone marrow and cord blood stem cells, this does not stop the rapid claiming of intellectual property in this area. Patent #7,452,529 was issued last week to Viacell (now Perkin Elmers) covering use of cord blood for treatment of muscular dystrophy. Speaking of non-hematopoietic uses of hematopoietic-associated cells, the use of autologous bone marrow cells to inhibit post-infarct remodelling has previously been subject to several clinical trials and is still topic of major interest. These cells are usually administered using a balloon catheter that temporarily blocks circulation of the coronary artery. If we understood correctly, patent #7,452,532 essentially covers this procedure, and is not limited to autologous bone marrow but also includes adipose stme cells. If you are in this area, its worth a look at. Geron added a new patent to its collection, #7,452,718 covering a new method of making embryonic stem cells (and iPS) into cardiomyocytes but skipping the step of embryoid body formation. Finally, a VERY interesting paper from the group of adipose stem cell leader Keith March, demonstrating therapeutic effects of supernatants from the adipose stromal fraction on an animal model of cerebral palsy. | Patent Number: 7,452,662 The stem cell compartment is part of a physiological system that responds to various stimuli. For example, during infections, the hematopoietic stem cells produce more granulocytes to fight off the sickness, or during periods of hypoxia (such as living on a mountain), they produce more erythrocytes. Inventors have used the... [Read More] Ask a question OR leave your comments. | | |
