== IN THE SKY THIS WEEK ==
The Last Quarter Moon is Thursday 20 November. Bright Venus is easily seen high in the early evening sky in the 'teapot' of Sagittarius with Jupiter (the brightest object in the sky after Venus). Venus and Jupiter come much closer together this week, heading for a fantastic encounter in early December. On Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 November, Venus is very close to the bright star Nunki in the handle of the 'teapot'. The asteroid Vesta can be seen in binoculars low in the east, near the tail of Cetus the Whale. Saturn can be seen low in the north eastern morning sky just before dawn. On Sunday 23 November the waning Moon is near Saturn.

THE SCIENCE SHOW - A little stroke and a big scratch
Saturday 22 November, 12.05pm & Monday 24 November, 7.05pm RN
What kind of stroking do you like best? Neuroscientist Professor Francis McGlone at the University of Liverpool has found both rhythm and lightness of touch are important. He has used a robotic stroker to investigate. But what about itching? Does it have the same physiological basis? And why did one woman scratch so hard she went through her skull to the brain?

In 1800, a young boy emerged from the woods of the Aveyron District in France, naked and wild. From gestation to reproductive maturity requires an enormous amount of time, effort and energy so what role do hormones and the brain play in our development?

An important theme of the lectures is the pressing need for Australia to develop human capital. But to do this successfully our schools need serious reform, otherwise the global bar will seem set far beyond our reach.

IN CONVERSATION - Who needs Harvard?
Thursday 27 November, 7.35pm RN
He became a junior professor at Harvard at a preposterously early age – and then said 'thanks', and came back to Sydney. Is this rational behaviour? Bryan Gaensler assures us it is, because he has tremendous fun tracking supernovae with his astronomical mates back in Australia, but still maintains useful contact with his old crowd back in Boston. The best of both worlds! And in the cosmic one he's just revealed a celestial gem.

SLEEP CLINIC
ABC2, 8:00pm Wednesday, 26 November 2008
Derek is the strangest sleeper in Europe. Repeated medical attempts to treat his sleep problems have failed him and he continues to undergo a strange metamorphosis from a mild-mannered gentleman by day into a thrashing wild animal while he sleeps.
