== IN THE SKY THIS WEEK ==
The first quarter Moon is Thursday 6 November. Venus is easily seen high in the early evening sky in the constellation of the scorpion above the bright star Antares. Venus moves up through the scorpion heading towards Jupiter. By the end of the week Venus and Jupiter bracket the "teapot" of Sagittarius. On Saturday 1 November the Moon and Venus will be very close, forming a thin triangle with the bright red star Antares. Jupiter is high in the western evening sky above the constellation of the scorpion, the next brightest object in the sky after Venus. On Tuesday 4 November 4 the waxing Moon will be close to Jupiter. Saturn can be seen low in the north-eastern morning sky just before dawn.

THE SCIENCE SHOW - Bad science, vaccines and Tony Blair
Saturday 1 November, 12.05pm & Monday 3 November, 7.05pm RN
Dr Ben Goldacre's regular column in Britain's Guardian newspaper specialises in outing bad science. Now there is a book, released in Australia this week, of these sometimes shocking disclosures. Our case study on The Science Show is of the MMR vaccine, linked notoriously by a Dr Andrew Wakefield to autism. But it wasn't the paper he published making such a claim that set off the panic, it was the response by the Blair Family of Downing Street. Why?

ALL IN THE MIND - Future mind: Are computers radically changing the way we think?
Saturday 1 November, 1.05pm & Monday 3 November, 1.05pm RN
We live in a world mediated by flickering screens. But do 'people of the screen' think fundamentally differently to 'people of the book'? What will the brain look like in generations to come? Neuroscientist Susan Greenfield paints an apocalyptic vision of an identity lost and cognition fundamentally compromised, forever stuck in the sensory chaos of early childhood.

OCKHAM'S RAZOR - Aboriginal health
Sunday 2 November, 8.45am RN
Health director of the Jimmy Little Foundation and filmmaker Don Palmer tells us that kidney disease amongst Aboriginal people in Central Australia runs somewhere between 30 to 50 times the national average. Nearly 200 people are stuck on dialysis in this area alone and there are 200 more identified as pre-dialysis. The Pintupi people created art works that raised over a million dollars, so they now have a dialysis machine of their own which does away with the need to travel vast distances for treatment.

THE HEALTH REPORT - Public release of health care performance
Monday 3 November, 8.30am & 8.05pm RN
It has been suggested that publicly releasing performance results in the health care sector may influence and improve the quality of care in hospitals and other health care organisations. According to new studies the public release of performance data stimulates change in hospitals, but some quality deficits remain.

IN CONVERSATION - Here comes the sun
Thursday 6 November, 7.35pm RN
Our first NSW Scientist of the Year is Professor Martin Green, formerly of Queensland, now at the University of NSW. He has held the world record for the performance of photovoltaic cells for some years. Now his lead has been substantially increased. But why has this brilliant research often struggled for support? And what is the potential of the solar alternative to replace oil?

TREK: SPY ON THE WILDEBEEST - THE JOURNEY
ABC1, 7:30pm Sunday, 2 November 2008
Through the use of stealth-cam, cameras built inside capsules resembling everything from crocodiles and hippos to mud piles and dragonflies, the magnificent journey of more than a million wildebeest across Tanzania's Serengeti Plain has been captured like never before. The migration is the largest of land animals on the planet and the perils on the 3000km round trip, which the wildebeest take annually for food and water, are numerous. By land and across water, their lives are in constant danger from cheetahs, lions, hyenas and crocodiles, as well as nature's most gruelling physical challenges.

THE HOBBIT ENIGMA
ABC1, 8:30pm Tuesday, 4 November 2008
The Hobbit Enigma examines one of the greatest controversies in science today. Just what did scientists really find when they uncovered the tiny, human-like skeleton of a strange creature on the Indonesian island of Flores in 2003?
Are the bones a previously unknown and bizarre primitive species of human? How could the hobbits survive for so long and until so recently? Who were its ancestors? Is it possible that human origins are to be found in Asia, not Africa? The Hobbit Enigma forces us to ask the most difficult question of all - what does it mean to be human?
