New adult stem cell trials in Australia could mean fewer people
needing organ transplants in the future.
The first clinical trials have begun in Queensland using adult stem
cells taken from left-over birth material like placenta.
The cells can turn into muscle, bone and cartilage.
Professor Kerry Atkinson from Brisbane's Mater Hospital says the stem
cells can then be used on damaged organs.
"It's possible that some of these mesenchymal stem cells can be
utilised to repair or regenerate damaged tissue like damaged heart
muscle for example after a heart attack," he said.
He says in the long term it could remove the need for some solid
organ transplants.
