PI(3)K SIGNALING: SEPARATE BUT NOT EQUAL

The kinase activity of the PI(3)K subunit p110[beta] is linked to the
oncogenic transformation of mouse prostate epithelium, whereas a
second, kinase-independent activity regulates cellular proliferation
and signaling downstream of tyrosine-kinase receptors.

G protein alpha 13
http://ealerts.nature.com/cgi-bin24/DM/y/emnk0Xztnp0H2W0B2ir0E8

One of the first recognized functions of this G protein was the
ability of a constitutively activated G[alpha]13 mutant to transform
cultured fibroblasts when overexpressed. G[alpha]13 stimulates the
formation of actin stress fibers and the assembly of focal adhesions
in a RhoA-dependent manner. It also has an important role in the
immune system, where it regulates neutrophil polarity and motility.

MEMBRANE TRAFFICKING: ALL CISTERNAE ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL
A novel 'membrane partitioning' model of membrane trafficking posits
that Golgi enzymes and transmembrane cargo are rapidly partitioned
between two distinct lipid phases of a continuous Golgi stack, with
a high rate of exchange among the cisternae.

LEUKAEMIA: MIXED UP
A mouse model of mixed-lineage leukemia has revealed that inhibition
of the GTPase Rac results in cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, with a
concomitant increase in BCL-XL degradation.

IMAGING AND VISUALIZATION: A TIME STAMP FOR PROTEINS
A self-cleaving protein tag simplifies the labeling and visualization
of newly synthesized target proteins in tissue and whole animals.

NEUROSCIENCE: STANDARD MODEL
http://ealerts.nature.com/cgi-bin24/DM/y/emnk0Xztnp0H2W0B2am0Eu

The results of drug tests in mice have never translated perfectly to
tests in humans, but researchers are coming to believe that tests in
mouse models of neurodegenerative conditions may have been performed
with less than optimal rigor. The studies included small sample sizes
and were not properly randomized, casting doubt on the statistical
and clinical significance of the findings.
