The New Moon is Sunday 31 August. Venus and Mercury are easily seen together in the early evening sky, with dimmer Mars above them. As the week progresses Mercury, Venus and Mars draw closer and form a distinct triangle. On Monday September 1 and Tuesday September 2 the thin crescent Moon joins the three planets in a beautiful display. Jupiter is the brightest object above the eastern horizon in the evening, and its moons look great in binoculars. Comet A1 McNaught can be seen in binoculars near the Southern Cross.

OCKHAM'S RAZOR - A sleeper in the climate change debate
Sunday 31 August, 8.45am RN
The CEO of Green Cross Australia, Mara Bun reports on what will happen if sea levels continue to rise. Historically vast populations have settled in coastal and river deltas because the land is fertile and fish and wildlife thrive in the wetlands; but the ocean's upper layers are warming and sea levels are rising. Science now tells us that we could experience an 88cm rise by the end of the century if greenhouse gas emissions keep increasing and this will have catastrophic effects on vast populations the world over.
