== IN THE SKY THIS WEEK ==

The Last Quarter Moon is Friday 25 July. Venus can now be readily seen just above the western horizon in the early twilight. During the week it rises higher in the sky, heading towards Regulus, Mars and Saturn. By the end of the week these four objects form an attractive line above the north-west horizon in the early evening. Jupiter can be seen as the brightest object above the eastern horizon in the evening, and its moons look great in binoculars. This is an excellent time to look at this giant world through a small telescope. If you don't have a telescope, go to one of your local astronomical societies open days. In the late evening of Monday 28 July to the early morning of Tuesday 29 July, the Aquariid meteor shower may be seen. Places with clear, dark skies should see a meteor every 3-5 minutes or so.

SCIENCE SHOW - Saving Chinese archaeological treasures
Saturday 26 July, 12.05pm & Monday 28 July, 7.05pm RN
Now that China is building at an unprecedented rate many sites will soon be covered by concrete or even flooded. Professor Rowan Flad of Harvard University has spent years in the region where the Three Dams will cause vast areas to be covered by water. He has unearthed millions of artefacts (pottery) and animal bones. But can archaeologists do enough before it is too late? And what is the Chinese Government's attitude to the conflicts between science and development?

Saturday 26 July, 1.05pm, & Monday 28 July, 1.05pm RN
As old as the state of Queensland itself, Goodna Mental Hospital became Australia's largest asylum, housing 50,000 people over its lifetime. During a time of major institutional and cultural upheaval, the Office of the Patient's Friend opened its doors in 1977, the first patient advocacy service to operate within the confines of an Australian psychiatric hospital. Part advocate, part whistle-blower – running the service has taken a might of steel and a heart of gold. Over 30 years later, Nadia Beer remains in the role.

THE PHILOSOPHER'S ZONE - Philosophy at sea
Saturday 26 July, 1.30pm & Monday 28 July, 1.35pm RN
Herman Melville, the man who created Moby Dick, also told the story of Billy Budd, an angelic, essentially good, seaman aboard a British man-of-war who is hanged for killing an evil colleague in a outburst of rage. But did his captain do the right, the just, thing? Did he behave morally or with rigid legality? A philosopher investigates and reaches a republican conclusion.

Sunday 27 July, 8.45am RN
With the ever increasing price of oil Ian Dunlop, Deputy Convener of the Australian Association for the Study of Peak Oil takes this opportunity to explain exactly what the term means. When we pass this peak what are the solutions? Unfortunately most of them will take time to implement and the need is urgent. He also addresses our other problem – global warming and the fact that we have to radically reduce our carbon emissions from fossil fuel use.

IN CONVERSATION - Snoring kills
Thursday 31 July, 7.35pm .
The quiet hero of snoring therapy has just received a Clunies Ross Award, yet another recognition for physiologist Professor Colin Sullivan of Sydney University. His work begun over thirty years ago has led to a global, multi- billion dollar industry based on masks directing airflows over the user's face. But is it true that apnoea, when people stop breathing as they snore, is behind most of today's vascular disease? And what next in this immensely important research?
