Cells can repair tissue when instructed.
UK researchers have presented their findings on adult stem cells
(ASC) and their ability to heal tissue when instructed. Their report
was presented at the UK National Stem Cell Network Annual Science
Meeting in Edinburgh yesterday.
Avoiding many of the ethical issues associated with embryonic stem
cells, ASCs could have many therapeutic uses and could potentially be
controlled by the chemical signalling systems within the body that
instruct cells to contribute to tissue repair.
Stem cells
Led by Professor Cay Kielty of the University of Manchester, the team
studied the stem cells found in human bone marrow called mesenchymal
stem cells (MSCs). These cells have the ability to relocate and
develop into several different types of cells. They are also likely
to trigger a severe immune response and could be suitable for `off-
the-shelf' treatments for tissue repair.
Professor Kielty said: "What we have shown is that adult stem cells
respond in particular ways to some of the chemical signals in the
body. The next stage will be to understand how this messaging system
regulates relocation of the MSCs and instructs them to become blood
vessel cells. After that, we can look at applying our understanding
to develop stem-cell derived therapies for tissue repair."
