SCIENCE SHOW - Tangled in Mystery
Saturday 15 March, 12.05pm & Monday 17 March, 7.05pm RN
How can an atomic particle remember where it came from light years from its origins? A photon reaching Earth will somehow still be connected to the star it left years ago! Nuts? Well, this kind of quantum mechanics drove Einstein wobbly, but is also the rock solid basis of modern electronics technology. Michael Brooks of New Scientist has written a gory novel (Entanglement) about this kind of physics and tells on the Science Show how it could be the means of inventing the next generation of immensely powerful computers. And while we're entangled: what about the discovery of solid light?

OCKHAM'S RAZOR - Protecting the world's cultural heritage
Sunday 16 March, 8.45am RN
Director of Studies for the International Law Association, Keith Suter discusses how cultural property is often targeted in wars and directs his attention to one of the world's most significant places for archaeology – Iraq. There is religious based vandalism as well as pillaging for profit with a great deal of money to be made from stolen antiquities. In 1954 with WWII still fresh in the minds of the delegates UNESCO convened a conference on the protection of cultural property. Unfortunately there has been a low level of priority given to implementing the treaties.
