ANGIOGENESIS: PGC-1alpha PROVIDES A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

The transcriptional coactivator PGC-1alpha and transcription factor
ERR-alpha stimulate angiogenesis in hypoxic conditions by directly
upregulating VEGF expression.

PDE6A
http://ealerts.nature.com/cgi-bin24/DM/y/ejK50Xztnp0H2W0BoM80EC

Phosphodiesterase 6A (PDE6A) is a catalytic subunit of the
rod-specific cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase 6 (PDE6) enzyme.
PDE6 is highly selective for cyclic GMP over cyclic AMP. PDE6 serves
as an effector enzyme in the rod phototransduction cascade. Mutations
in PDE6A can lead to the development of autosomal recessive retinitis
pigmentosa, a common hereditary disease of retinal degeneration that
can result in vision loss caused by the death of the rod and cone
photoreceptors.

TUMOUR IMMUNOLOGY: TGFbeta BETRAYS IMMUNITY FOR TUMORIGENESIS
Mammary tumors deficient in the type II TGF-beta receptor recruit
myeloid cells that produce TGF-beta1 and matrix metalloproteinases,
which facilitate tumor invasion and metastasis.

SIGNALLING: STRUCTURAL SURVEY
The crystal structure of the p110alpha catalytic subunit of PI3K in
complex with the p85alpha regulatory subunit illuminates the
mechanisms by which p110alpha oncogenic mutations activate the protein.
Original research paper: Science 318, 1744-1748 (2007)

ANTICANCER DRUGS: REVERSING RESISTANCE
The small molecule obatoclax inhibits pro-survival BCL2 family
members, thus restoring the sensitivity of drug-resistant tumors to
several new anticancer drugs.
