Programme | Introduction: Using stem cells to treat patients suffering from major diseases like Parkinson's and diabetes is one of the most hotly debated topics in the media. Are these treatments safe? What do scientists and patients make of them? Are they available in the UK ? As part of the 200 person audience, you will be asked to read a fictional application by a biotechnology company for permission to use nerve cells obtained from umbilical cord blood to treat a group of patients with Parkinson's Disease. Using an electronic voting system, you will cast your vote on whether permission should be granted or not. You will then be shown a series of short, award- winning films, followed by a discussion with members of the panel during which you'll have the chance to make comments and ask questions. At the end of the discussion you will be asked to vote again on the same issue. |
