High-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation, the controversial, arduous, yet once-popular combination treatment that fell out of favor as a therapy for breast cancer, has proven not to be beneficial as an adjuvant therapy for women with node-positive disease, according to an expansive analysis conducted by researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Five Bay Area research institutions will be considered for a share of $262 million in state grants from California's stem cell agency to build and equip new laboratories. The institutions are Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of California at San Francisco, the University of California at Santa Cruz and the Buck Institute for Age Research in Novato.
