Scientists Cure Mice Of Sickle Cell Using Stem Cell Technique
Washington Post Thu, 06 Dec 2007 8:45 PM PST
Using a recently developed technique for turning skin cells into stem cells, scientists have cured mice of sickle cell anemia -- the first direct proof that the easily obtained cells can reverse an inherited, potentially fatal disease.

New stem cell technique effects cure
AP via Yahoo! News Thu, 06 Dec 2007 2:42 PM PST
Scientists have the first evidence that those "reprogrammed stem cells" that made headlines last month really have the potential to treat disease: They used skin from the tails of sick mice to cure the rodents of sickle cell anemia.

Tail stem cells used to cure sickle cell anemia in mice
AFP via Yahoo! News Thu, 06 Dec 2007 11:47 AM PST
Stem cell research took another major step forward Thursday when scientists announced they had cured sickle cell anemia in mice using stem cells derived from adult skin.

Researchers use new stem cell method to treat mice
Reuters via Yahoo! News Thu, 06 Dec 2007 12:01 PM PST
Using a new type of stem cells made from ordinary skin cells, U.S. researchers said on Thursday they treated mice with sickle cell anemia, proving in principle that such cells could be used as a therapy.

New Kind of Stem Cells Reverse Sickle Cell Anemia
HealthDay via Yahoo! News Thu, 06 Dec 2007 10:59 AM PST
THURSDAY, Dec. 6 (HealthDay News) --Scientists have succeeded in using cells virtually identical to embryonic stem cells to "correct" sickle cell anemia in mice.

Stem-cell agency flags 4 universities' grant requests for conflict of interest violations
San Francisco Chronicle Thu, 06 Dec 2007 10:18 PM PST
California's stem cell agency may toss out grant applications seeking millions of dollars for researchers at UCSF and other prestigious universities because they included letters of support from deans who also sit on the citizens' board that governs the $3...

Stem cells reverse sickle cell anemia in mice
Los Angeles Times Thu, 06 Dec 2007 12:20 PM PST
Rodents treated with reprogrammed adult cells showed vast improvement after three months. The therapy is several years away from being applied to humans. Taking the next step in a series of breakthrough stem cell experiments, scientists have cured sickle cell anemia in mice by rewinding their skin cells to an embryonic state and manipulating them to create healthy, genetically matched ...

Stem Cell Scientists Cure Sickle Cell Disease in Mice
The New York Sun Thu, 06 Dec 2007 9:29 PM PST
WASHINGTON — Using a newly developed technique for turning skin cells into stem cells, scientists have cured mice of sickle cell anemia — the first direct proof that the easily obtained cells can reverse an inherited, potentially fatal disease. Researchers said the work, published in yesterday's online edition of the journal Science, points to a promising future for the novel cells. Known as iPS ...
