miR-145 and miR-143 regulate smooth muscle cell fate and plasticity
pp705-710
Evidence for a single microRNA (miRNA) that can efficiently differentiate
multipotent stem cells into a specific lineage or regulate direct
reprogramming of cells into an alternative cell fate has been elusive.
Two miRNAs, miR-145 and miR-143, are now shown to be co-transcribed in
multipotent cardiac progenitors before becoming localized to smooth
muscle cells. miR-145 was found to be necessary for myocardin-induced
reprogramming of adult fibroblasts and sufficient to induce
differentiation of multipotent neural crest stem cells.

Single-stranded RNA viruses are responsible for the common cold,
cancer, AIDS and other serious health threats. The genomes of these
viruses form conserved secondary structures that have functional
and regulatory roles, but most potential regulatory elements in
viral RNA genomes remain uncharacterized. Here however, the
structure of an entire HIV-1 genome at single nucleotide resolution
is reported.

A high stellar velocity dispersion for a compact massive galaxy at
redshift z = 2.186 pp717-719
The oldest and most luminous galaxies in the early Universe are
surprisingly compact, having stellar masses similar to present-day
elliptical galaxies but much smaller sizes. This suggests that massive
galaxies have grown in size by a factor of about five over the past
ten billion years, leading to the expectation that the stars in these
galaxies have much higher velocities than those in present-day galaxies
of the same mass. Here, the stellar velocity dispersion for a compact
massive galaxy at redshift z = 2.186 is indeed found to be very high.

Observed variations of methane on Mars unexplained by known atmospheric

Recent observations of methane on Mars suggest that methane concentrations
are locally enhanced and change with the seasons. However, methane has a
photochemical lifetime of several centuries, and is therefore expected to
have a spatially uniform distribution on the planet. Here, using a global
climate model of Mars with coupled chemistry reveals that photochemistry
as currently understood cannot explain these variations in Martian methane.

The low 13C/12C ratio in some Neoproterozoic carbonates is considered
to be evidence of carbon cycle perturbations unique to the Precambrian.
Here, all published oxygen and carbon isotope data for Neoproterozoic
marine carbonates are compiled. The combined isotope systematics are
found to be identical to those of well-understood Phanerozoic examples,
suggesting an influx of photosynthetic carbon rather than perturbations
to the carbon cycle -- and implying an explosion of photosynthesizing
communities on late Precambrian land surfaces.

"The two notes signed in February and March of 2007 respectively, between CBAI and the Shelter Island Opportunity Fund (SIOF), have been retired as of August 3, 2009. With this debt retirement, CBAI has only the put option agreement obligation with SIOF remaining on its balance sheet. Cord Blood America regards this as a key milestone on its path to being able to operate debt free," said Matthew Schissler, Cord Blood America Founder and CEO. "Shelter Island provided us with the capital to purchase CorCell, which is the first licensed family cord blood banking company in the United States. Using their financing allowed us to establish CBAI as one of the largest domestic stem cell storage companies. Our obligation was to pay the notes in full before the February 28, 2010 maturity date. We are happy to have met the obligation and have saved a significant amount of interest payments because of early payoff."

Letter Describes Capital Funding, Strengthening of Senior Management Team, Agreement with Cytograft Tissue Engineering, Positive Results from Animal Trials, and Other Developments

International Stem Cell Corporation (OTCBB:ISCO), the first company to perfect a method of creating human stem cells from unfertilized eggs, has issued a letter to its shareholders. In the letter, International Stem Cell CEO and Chairman, Kenneth Aldrich updates shareholders on the company's continued efforts to increase shareholder value related to its key initiatives and developments, which include:

  • The Company continues to lead in the development of human parthenogenetic stem cell ("hpSC") research. ISCO has made major strides in deriving cells that may be useful in the treatment of liver disease and in the creation of human corneal tissue both as a potential therapeutic product for corneal disease and as an alternative to animal testing to assess the safety of drugs and consumer products.
  • $5 million investment commitment with a biotechnology-focused fund announced in July; funding expected to be in tranches, with first $1.5 million expected in September. Additional $1 million tranche funded on schedule under previously announced preferred stock offering, and over $500,000 in private common stock sales funded during first 6 months of 2009
  • Senior management team strengthened to provide greater capacity and flexibility as company expands its therapeutic and commercial activities
  • Positive early results reported in May from animal trials designed to improve photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), a form of corrective laser eye surgery that offers an improved alternative to LASIK
  • March 2009 agreement with Cytograft Tissue Engineering to design custom cell culture medium to cultivate living human vascular grafts
