POST-TRANSLATIONAL MODIFICATIONS: THE ACTIVE TGF-BETA RECEPTOR IS
SUMOYLATED

Transforming growth factor-beta receptor type I is sumoylated,
which regulates Smad3 activation and affects invasion and metastasis.

PINK1
http://ealerts.nature.com/cgi-bin24/DM/y/eljC0Xztnp0H2W0Bx750Eh

PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK1) is a serine/threonine kinase that is
primarily localized to the mitochondria in eukaryotic cells.
Loss-of-function mutations in the PINK1 gene have been
correlated with early-onset parkinsonism. Other mutations in PINK1
are associated with recessively inherited forms of familial
Parkinson's disease. Protein overexpression and gene-knockdown
studies suggest that PINK1 has a critical anti-apoptotic function
that prevents mitochondrial depolarization/permeablization in
response to various cellular insults, including proteosomal
inhibition and oxidative stress.

METASTASIS: WHICH WAY TO THE LUNGS?
TGFbeta-mediated upregulation of the cytokine angiopoietin-like
protein 4 (ANGPTL4) disrupts endothelial cell contacts, which
contributes to lung metastasis of primary breast cancers.

LAB DISINFECTANT HARMS MOUSE FERTILITY
http://ealerts.nature.com/cgi-bin24/DM/y/eljC0Xztnp0H2W0Bxvw0Eq

Two chemicals widely used in cleaning agents cause birth defects and
fertility problems in mice whose cages have been in contact with
them, according to Patricia Hunt at Washington State University in
Pullman. The quaternary ammonium compounds ADBAC (n-alkyl dimethyl
benzyl ammonium chloride) and DDAC (didecyl dimethyl ammonium
chloride) were identified after a search for what was causing a
massive drop-off in mouse fertility after Hunt moved her research
animals to Pullman from Case Western Reserve Medical School.
