== IN THE SKY THIS WEEK ==

The New Moon is Thursday 3 July. Mars and Saturn are above the north-west horizon in the early evening forming a triangle with the bright star Regulus. During the week Mars moves closer towards Saturn and Regulus and by the end of the week Mars is very close to Regulus, forming a narrow triangle with Saturn. Jupiter can be seen as the brightest object above the eastern horizon in the evening, and its moons look great in binoculars. Mercury is visible in the early morning, just underneath Alderbaran and the Hyades cluster, with Orion and the Pleiades close by, this makes a beautiful morning sight. On Tuesday July 1 the thin crescent Moon forms a triangle with Alderbaran and Mercury. Comet Boattini is now easily visible in binoculars in the morning sky above Orion.

IN CONVERSATION - The naming of plants
Thursday 3 July, 7.35pm
This week In Conversation finds out why so many plants take their names from Greco-Roman gods and goddesses. Nice smelling flowers often receive titles based on Aphrodite the goddess of love, lust and beauty. But what types of plants have been unlucky enough to be named after Hera, the ill-tempered wife (and sister!) of Zeus? Or Kronos, who castrated and killed his father and then swallowed all but one of his newborn children? Botanist Peter Bernhardt takes us on a colourful historical journey into the naming of plants.
