Adipocytes and scar tissue form during skeletal muscle degeneration.
Two new studies reveal that adipocytes and fibroblasts in skeletal
muscle derive from a population of bipotent progenitors that reside
within muscle, but are not derived from the muscle lineage. These
progenitor cells also have a surprising role in stimulating the
restoration of muscle mass during regeneration.

There is increasing evidence of a crosstalk between integrins and TGF-[beta] signaling in normal physiology and numerous pathological processes, including systemic sclerosis, pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cancer. Polyadenylation and degradation of incomplete RNA polymerase I transcripts in mammalian cells
Pestov and colleagues demonstrate that polyadenylation acts as a surveillance mechanism for aberrant RNA Polymerase I transcripts in mammals and find a role for the noncanonical poly(A) polymerase PAPD5 and the exosome in this process. The authors also show that polyadenylated truncated pre-rRNA species accumulate when cells are treated with low doses of actinomycin D, thus revealing a previously unknown property of a drug commonly utilized to block rRNA synthesis.Pestov and colleagues demonstrate that polyadenylation acts as a surveillance mechanism for aberrant RNA Polymerase I transcripts in mammals and find a role for the noncanonical poly(A) polymerase PAPD5 and the exosome in this process. Transfer-messenger RNA controls the translation of cell-cycle and stress proteins in Streptomyces

Castanier and colleagues report that mitochondrial dynamics play a role in innate anti-viral immunity by regulating the RIG-I-like receptor (RLR)/MAVS pathway. The authors show that RLR activation promotes elongation of mitochondria, which enhances signalling downstream of MAVS and favours the binding of MAVS to STING, an ER protein involved in the RLR pathway. Activating mutations in EGFR are characteristic of patients with lung
cancer who have high sensitivity to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors,
such as gefitinib and erlotinib. The randomized IPASS study by Mok and
colleagues confirmed that patients with EGFR mutations have a higher
response rate, longer progression-free survival and improved quality
of life when treated with first-line gefinitib instead of chemotherapy.

Surgical oncology: Why biopsying metastatic breast cancer should be
routine

breast cancer is not routine. Instead therapeutic decisions in this

As biopsies are diagnostic and changes can occur between the primary
and the secondary tumors, the routine biopsy of suspected metastatic
deposits needs to be considered. Such biopsies will also be key to
translational research, which will underpin future therapeutic advances.

genomic biomarkers. High-throughput genomic technologies have revolutionized
genomic research but challenges in biomarker assessment include clinical
study design, reproducibility and interpretation of results. This Review

profiling, and highlights some common failings in study design that have
impacted on the clinical use of putative genomic markers.

T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder potentially induced by imatinib in
a patient with GIST

A 71-year-old male patient was diagnosed with a KIT-positive gastrointestinal
stromal tumor (GIST). The patient received adjuvant imatinib but developed
several subcutaneous and intra-abdominal tumor lesions after 4 months
of treatment. A T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder was suspected. The
authors discuss the potential of imatinib to induce reversible clonal
T-cell proliferations in patients with GIST who develop new tumor
manifestations that are suspicious for relapse.

INTRODUCTION

This conference aims to bring together leading basic and clinical scientists to share the latest research on retinal ganglion cells and their roles in vision and disease. The goal is to take a comprehensive look at this critical and complex class of neurons, examining their development and establishment of axonal and dendritic connections, their diverse functions in processing signals from the outer retina and detecting light directly, how they are affected in glaucoma, optic nerve damage, and other disease conditions, and how our understanding of these processes can lead to novel therapeutic approaches.

As a satellite to the annual meeting of ARVO, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, we are requested by ARVO, as co-sponsor, to stipulate that you do not present the same work at both the Vision Research conference and the ARVO main meeting. NB. Selected quality posters will be chosen to present a 10 minute oral presentation based on their poster and latest results.

Abstracts are invited for poster presentations on the following symposium topics. Please submit abstracts using the Online Submission Form by
3 February 2010 according to the abstract preparation guidelines.
